Advanced technology has brought the world closer and it has become a global village. The internet has ensured that people can keep in contact easily even when separated by thousands of miles and all it takes is a click of the mouse.

The internet has undoubtedly revolutionized our lives and the big desk-top computers have progressed to small carry-on `notebooks` or `laptops` as they are more popularly known. In another word, with a notebook, your computer goes where you go since they are portable computers.

A notebook normally weighs less than six pounds depending upon the materials used for its manufacture and its size and can be easily fitted into a briefcase. Notebook computers are no longer expensive or fancy gadgets to flaunt but are being used rigorously by most as business, study or hobby tools to give solid competition to the standard desk-top computer.

The notebook or laptop has become so indispensable that most of us can`t dream of stepping out of the house without one. What would a harried executive or a salesperson or a student do without his beloved laptop?! Company executives, sales people store all their business data on the laptop for instant access to information even while traveling.

For students, a notebook is essential to do research and is much more convenient than hanging out in neighborhood internet joints. Study material can as easily be stored on the desk-top computer as much as on a laptop but the former cannot beat the latter for sheer convenience. Students now have to make a lot of presentations in schools, colleges and having a notebook certainly helps as everything can be stored on it and carried with them.

The same goes for company executives or salespeople when they have to make presentations or a sales pitch. The laptop permits you to carry your work load very conveniently and you don`t have to worry about the hardware or getting wires connected or finding the appropriate space to place your computer. If you`d rather work from home than stay back late at work, it lets you do that being easily portable.

A single main battery is normally required to run the notebook but the battery can also be charged using an external AC/DC adaptor which simultaneously provides power to the laptop itself. If you are using the notebook a lot, the charge may not last more than an hour but light use will see the notebook working for at least two to five hours.

The display screens are very lightweight and not bulky and are much superior to the desk-top computer. One can get a really wide screen on a notebook and with wireless cards entertainment can be accessed on the go. Really top-of-line notebooks use the latest technology to provide state-of-the art performance.

The notebook computers generally have a liquid crystal display and its memory module is different from that of desk-top computers. Most notebook computers have a VGA resolution on their display screens. A built-in keyboard and a touchpad are provided in a notebook computer though an external mouse or keyboard can also be used instead.

Notebook computers generally have similar CPU, memory capacity, hard disc space as that of the desk-top computer but these are smaller and manufactured for optimal efficiency and mobility.

However, a notebook computer with very powerful features will be very expensive when compared to the desk-top computer with similar features. Usually, a notebook or laptop is less powerful than a desk-top computer at the same cost. Also, bear in mind that replacement parts of a notebook are expensive and since they are very specific, obtaining them on your own may get difficult. Do keep these points in mind before you venture to buy a notebook!

You can have access to portuguese articles about notebooks from page Notebook Roberto Sedycias works as IT consultant for www.polomercantil.com.br

What's 1 primary laptop plus 1 secondary, smaller computer equal? Want, that's what. Asus just showed us a modified <strike>G50</strike> M50 media laptop with a secondary 4.3 LCD <strike>display</strike> computer with some help from Microsoft here at Asus' CES presser. Microsoft actually calls it "two computers in one chassis" running independently from each other but sharing a common battery. The smaller computer will run for over 12 hours for all your widgeting (contacts, email, etc) needs -- alas, it does not appear to be removable. Funny thing is, not a single mention by Microsoft about SideShow. Check the video after the break, it's compelling and nerd sexy to see a movie launch from the small, second computer onto the larger display.

Update: We spoke to Asus and learned that this prototype is planned for production this year. A version featuring a removable, secondary computer (think MID) is a possible followup.
Continue reading Asus features modded G50 with 4.3-inch secondary computer, oh my

Asus features modded G50 with 4.3-inch secondary computer, oh my originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 20:31:00 EST.

Some aspects of digital camera technology can be confusing for the beginner. We’ve tried to clearly explain some of the terms used to help you understand the technology better and to help to end the confusion. We also hope this guide will help you to choose your next digital camera. Terms like pixel, white balance, and zoom are explained below and we also look at the various types of storage media used in digital cameras.

Pixels

Pixels are the tiny, square elements that make up digital images. The term comes from ‘picture elements’ and millions of pixels in digital images make up the continuous, smooth image that you see. Cameras are categorised by pixel count. A higher number will give a better quality, smoother image and the larger the image size can be without loss of quality. Digital cameras have a pixel count between one and fourteen million, designated as 1 MP (one million pixels) to 14 Mp. Popular cameras usually have a pixel count of between 2 Mp and 5 Mp.

A 3 Mp camera will make excellent prints at 4” x 6” and reasonably good 5

One of the most popular gifts to buy this year is the 7″ digital photo frame. Something like this is great for any holiday or occasion. You don’t even need a reason to buy something like this as a gift but it will make the recipient very happy. These frames are the best option because they are loaded with functionality which includes video, audio, photo viewing, and they are really easy to use.

Many people often stay away from the technical gadgets because they look too difficult to use. This is not the case with a digital photo frame. Remember when you though a digital camera was going to be too much for you. The 7″ digital photo frame is even easier. You can connect a digital camera directly to the frame to add your new photos and even a camera phone. Anyone who loves taking pictures and has them displayed all over their home will love a frame like this.

Music is another fabulous option when you gift a frame like this. Not only can you view your favorite photos but you can even add music files to the frames too. This means they can be used as a jukebox and you can rotate through your favorite songs. If you know someone who loves music they might just love a frame this year.

You might even know someone who is not into still photos but they love video. The 7″ digital photo frame will allow someone to add their favorite video clips. These little frames recognize video files and they can be loaded easily from a video camera or straight from the computer. The frame will randomly play different clips added to the frame. If you are buying for someone who loves video and they have a lot of it be sure the memory on the frame is large enough to hold plenty of clips. You also might want to consider adding an additional memory card.

There are additional features people absolutely love with these frames which include a calendar and a built in alarm. Imagine using your picture frame as an alarm clock and waking up to your favorite music and your favorite photos being displayed.

If you are looking at a 7″ digital photo frame you might want to find one with a remote control. Most of them come with a remote control today and this makes them easier to manage. No one wants to have to handle the frame every time they want to make a change. The remote makes it easy to manage the music, photos, and video files with the touch of a button.

This Christmas just past we have seen an incredible increase in the number of people buying digital photo frames. It certainly isn’t too much of a stretch of the imagination to see a day, maybe ten years from now where digital frames have all but replaced traditional one, as digital cameras have replaced all but a few hardcore fans of traditional cameras.

7″ digital photo frames are becoming one of the most popular presents around this Christmas. They’re achieving amazing sales and you might consider buying someone you love one of these if they spend a lot of time with media files. This is the best gift to organize photos, listen to music, and even watch video files.

Are you limited to use Internet on schedule or on rate? Do you remember the days of dial-up connections, when to save money, you’d try and save and download as many pages as possible for reading later? Now with the advent of broadband, those days are thankfully gone for most people. But there are occasions when you might want to save a whole website for offline reading or to do a backup. If that’s your case, then you should have a powerful and handy offline browser. Here I will commend some excellent and applied offline browsers to you. They are: SurfOffline, A1 Website Download, BackStreet Browser, BlackWidow and Offline Commander. Follow me and there must have a suited one for you!

SurfOffline is a fast and convenient offline browser with easy navigation and simple interface. Capable of downloading up to 100 files simultaneously, this application can save a website to our hard drive completely or partially in just minutes. Another important feature is a wizard like interface that enables the users to quickly set up downloading rules. Importantly, the program supports HTTP, SSL(HTTPS), FTP, proxy servers, CSS, Macromedia Flash and JavaScript parsing.

A1 Website Download enables us to download and archive entire websites for offline browsing or storage. The downloaded site(s) can be browsed without the need for an internet connection and can be placed on a CD/DVD or USB drive. The program supports website logins and cookies and automatically stores dynamic pages as static .html files. We can set a variety of filters and options that allows us to determine how links are followed and which pages to download. Other features include support for frames, redirects, multi-threaded operation, link conversion and more. Unlike most website download tools, this website downloader program will copy websites to our disk, and not store websites using a proprietary database format. As all links get corrected to relative file paths, we can copy and take the downloaded websites with us anywhere, and later view them offline in any browser.

BackStreet Browser is a free, powerful offline browser. A high-speed, multi-threading website download and viewing program. By making multiple simultaneous server requests, BackStreet Browser can quickly download entire website or part of a site including HTML, graphics, Java Applets, sound and other user definable files, and saves all the files in our hard drive, either in their native format, or as a compressed ZIP file and view offline. After downloading, all links within the website are reconstructed creating a complete hard drive copy of the site that we can view at our own pace without being connected to the Internet. Additionally, BackStreet Browser provides the option of duplicating the original directory structure of a site making it easy to download and transfer a site to another server. In the event we lose our Internet connection while downloading a site, the Resume Session allows us to pick up a session where we left off after reestablishing our Internet connection. If we wish to update a previously downloaded site, the Update Session feature allows us to revisit a site using new search parameters to make sure we have the most current files. In addition to the embedded quick-view browser window in the main program screen, we can launch our default browser for viewing any downloaded projects. The quick-view browser window also supports browsing zipped website, so that we don’t need to unzip the files to view.

BlackWidow is a multi-function internet utility and a great webmaster tool. It is a web site downloader, download internet manager, site mapping tool, a site ripper, a site mirroring tool, a website scanner, an offline browser and a download manager. We can use it to scan a site and create a complete profile of the site’s structure, files, external links and even link errors. Then use it to download part or entire web site to our computer, with its structure and files intact, to use as a site mirror or to be converted by BlackWidow into a locally linked site for offline browsing and long-term reference. Or use it to scan for and download any selection of files: from JPG to CGI to HTM to MIME types, from small to large files, in part of a site or in a group of sites. The Net Spy feature can monitor all our web activity and build a structure of everything we visit on every web site. This feature is especially useful to find hidden links to files or to spot redirections to other URLs.

Offline Commander lets us create local copies of entire Web sites, browse Web sites offline, organize our Web research, quickly save selected web pages to offline collections. All saved pages and sites are stored and indexed in a local SQL database and can be searched in depth (also via custom SQL query). The saved pages and sites can be browsed just as if they were online, complete with all images, links, and dynamic content, embedded objects etc. We can specify the depth and what type of files to download, also specify URL patterns to match and more. Offline Commander has a tabbed browser interface and provides a drop box that we can use to quickly save pages from within Internet Explorer or any other browser.

In a word, SurfOffline, A1 Website Download and Offline Commander provide most basal functions for downloading entire website. SurfOffline has an easy navigation and simple interface. Offline Commander has a tabbed browser interface and provides a drop box. Even beginners can use them expediently and fleetly. Unlike most website download tools, A1 Website Download will copy websites to disk, and not store websites using a proprietary database format. So as all links get corrected to relative file paths, we can copy and take the downloaded websites with us anywhere. BackStreet Browser is a multi-threading website download and viewing program. It provides an Update Session feature allows us to revisit a site using new search parameters to make sure we have the most current files. BlackWidow is a multi-function internet utility and a great webmaster tool. It’s Net Spy feature can monitor all our web activity and build a structure of everything we visit on every web site. What are you waiting for? Download a favorite offline browser now!
