Making Babies In Space May Not Be Easy
Published on August 31st, 2009.
Hugh Pickens writes "Studies of reproduction in space have previously been carried out with sea urchins, fish, amphibians and birds, but Brandon Keim writes in Wired that Japanese biologists have discovered that although mammalian fertilization may take place normally in space, as mouse embryos develop in microgravity their cells have trouble dividing and maturing. The researchers artificially fertilized mouse eggs with sperm that had been stored inside a three-dimensional clinostat, a machine that mimics weightlessness by rotating objects in such a way that the effects of gravity are spread in every direction. Some embryos were ultimately implanted in female mice and survived to a healthy birth, but at lower numbers than a regular-gravity control group. Part of the difference could be the result of performing tricky procedures on sensitive cells, but the researchers suspect they also reflect the effect of a low-gravity environment on cellular processes that evolved for Earth-specific physics. '"These results suggest for the first time that fertilization can occur normally under G environment in a mammal, but normal preimplantation embryo development might require 1G," concludes the report. "Sustaining life beyond Earth either on space stations or on other planets will require a clear understanding of how the space environment affects key phases of mammalian reproduction."'"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Anonymous Web Surfing or With Software: Which is Better?
Published on August 31st, 2009.
The Internet has become an indispensable part of our lives. Most people have taken advantage of online technology in doing various transactions like shopping, banking, playing games or online chatting. Making online transactions requires you to enter passwords or information which you probably want to remain a secret.
Unfortunately, whenever you indulge in anonymous surfing, you provide personal information which is being recorded and can be easily monitored. Your IP address and personal data is being maintained by the service provider and can be easily marketed to a third party. Surfing anonymously provides you the option to consider free anonymous web surfing or looking for good, reliable and cheap anonymous surfing software. Now the question that comes to mind is which is the better option when it comes to maintaining the security of your identity is concerned.
With free anonymous web surfing, tools known as web anonymizers or proxies are commonly used to protect the identity of the user. They are free of charge and the procedure involved is very easy. Just go to the proxy site and type the website address you intend to browse. From there, you will be redirected to your target site.
Although using proxy sites would seem to be the solution to your problem, the truth of the matter is these sites are not helpful as many thought they would be. In fact, looking for a legitimate proxy website can be disappointing. If you do find one, chances are the site would bombard you with a lot of spam.
In addition, if you do find an honest and legal proxy site, you would end up giving up on free anonymous web surfing because the site is either too slow or highly undependable. Web anonymizers are only suitable for occasional surfers but if you are a regular browser, going back to the proxy site can be cumbersome.
Another dilemma with free anonymous web surfing is that majority of proxy sites are not compatible with SSL or SSH encryption. This means that you would not be able to access the most secured connections and conduct online transactions such as Internet shopping or banking.
On the other hand, considering anonymous surfing software to browse the Internet guarantees complete anonymity and security of your identity. Anonymous surfing software can be installed on your computer and can keep your personal information completely concealed.
Moreover, anonymous surfing software is capable of effortlessly switching from one proxy site to another while keeping web traffic secured from the client and back. They provide a guarantee that all your surfing activities will be unavailable to third party organizations.
Another advantage of anonymous surfing software is that they are not only compatible with SSL or SSH encryption but it also keeps your web-based applications secured.
When choosing between free anonymous web surfing and a reliable anonymous surfing software, the first thing you need to consider is the amount of online confidentiality and security you will need. If you are only an occasional user who browses the Internet for enjoyment, availing of free service may be the way to go.
However, if surfing the Internet is a regular part of your routine, then the best option is to purchase anonymous surfing software.

The Advantages of Using an Unlocked Cell Phone
Published on August 31st, 2009.
Planning to switch to another service provider for your mobile phone? Most cellular phone providers use a certain program code that will lock the unit to that provider without allowing the user of the phone to gain access to the code. However, even though your cell phone is locked to a service provider, it is still possible for you to keep your old phone without switching to a new provider. Here we will look at the steps on how to unlock your cell phone.
There are many reasons why you need to unlock your cell phone. First, it gives you the opportunity of maximizing the features of your phone. Some service providers do not provide sufficient features or is not the suitable feature for your need. Unfortunately, some of these companies permanently lock their phones so that you will have no choice but to stick to that provider.
Another reason why you need to unlock your cell phone is because it is cost-efficient to do so. For example, if your work entails a lot of travel and want to avail of cheaper cost on international calls, you could easily switch service. By maintaining a similar service, you will payment for the roaming fees. With an unlocked mobile phone, you can easily take advantage of the cheaper rates of the rival provider.
Before going down to the procedures of how to unlock your cell phone, it is worth mentioning the two types of cell phones. The first one uses a technology called code division multiple access (CDMA). The second type uses Global System for Mobile communications (GSM). The former does not utilize a SIM card, so there is no need to unlock your cell phone while the latter uses SIM cards. GSM phones are the standard used in over two hundred countries worldwide. GSM providers can lock their units so that the user cannot have access to rival providers.
To determine if the cell phone uses GSM or CDMA, borrow the SIM card of your friend and insert it to your cell phone. If it reads the SIM card of your friend, then the cell phone is not locked. This means that you can take advantage of the better features that the rival provider is offering.
On the other hand, if the phone is locked, you will be able to receive an error message. This means that you cannot use the cell phone if it was provided by a rival provider.
It is so easy to learn how to unlock cell phone. You can contact the provider to give you access to the unlock codes for a certain fee. Likewise, you can also check websites that provide the codes. Normally, you would be charged $5 to $10 to access the unlock code.
However, learning how to unlock your cell phone would require more than just an unlock code. There are some units that would also require a data cable to be connected to the programming unit.
Using an unlocked cell phone is every customer’s right. A mobile service provider who locks phones to their network is unfair on your part, after you fulfill whatever contract you signed of course.

Wonders of PC to Cell Phone Text Messaging
Published on August 31st, 2009.
SMS technology is not only a mobile phone feature. It is on the World Wide Web too and it’s available for free. It is great way to connect and stay connected with people.
The Web is such an effective tool because nearly anybody of all ages now knows how to use the internet. One can shop, bank, pay bills, play games, promote, call, chat, email and a lot more.
It is not surprising that so many people around the globe are passionate into surfing online and spend literally the whole day sitting in front of the PC. But few individuals, may be neophytes, aren’t well aware that one can actually send messages from a regular computer to a mobile phone subscribed to any network.
That’s right, almost everything is possible now. And, aside from text messages being sent via PC to mobile phone, sending text messages from a computer to landline telephone and forwarding ring tones from a computer to cell phone, is feasible too.
Without doubt, the SMS technology offers an entirely different way of communicating with the world. Conveying a few words such as “what have you been up to?” or “hi, there!” with your circle of friends, family and relatives is easier and more convenient. You can remain connected with people at all times with SMS.
May be you are an accountant busy with your QuickBooks and face your PC the entire day at the office. Your hubby is a geodetic engineer assigned in a Southern African site. Texting him to say something endearing from your PC with Internet connection is fairly easy and simple. Or are you full time homemaker and rely on your spouse for your finances?
At last you are all set for the opening of your gift and boutique shop downtown. You need to invite friends and relatives but you don’t have a lot of time for formal invitations. Access your computer and type in a quick note inviting each one you wish to come to your shop launching. If you have a group messaging feature, you just have to key in your message and hit send only once. Supply the mobile numbers in and put your contacts in a group. Your invites can then email you or text you back.
Select a website that offers such feature. Follow the process of signing up. You can now send SMS to any cell phone number you choose. Your message will be received by your recipient right away (in less than 5 seconds after you click “send”). This service operates just like the process of a mobile phone-to-mobile phone text messaging. It is readily on hand at your fingertips and it is free. Registration and texting is normally provided free by commercial websites.
Like a mobile phone, there is also bulk texting using the personal computer. This is very helpful in sending out the same message to a lot of numbers in your contact. Rather than typing the same message repeatedly, you just need to compose it one time, input all the numbers of the people you want to include in the recipient list, and in just one click, the message is sent to all of them instantly. These are all in real time.
Texting technology really changed the way of communication in the modern world. It is just important to bear in mind always to use this technology responsibly.

The History of Text Messaging
Published on August 31st, 2009.
Text messaging is considered as the fastest and most reliable means of communication. It has gained worldwide popularity and has attracted billions of subscribers. Let us learn how text messaging was developed.
Text messaging or commonly called texting is the process of sending short messages usually 160 characters from a mobile phone. The latest mobile phones are capable of sending as much as 20 pages containing 160 characters of text messages. These messages are commonly called SMS, texts or text messages.
Text messaging technology uses an SMS gateway in order to hook up any mobile SMS service to an existing instant message service, Word Wide Web, PDA devices, personal computers as well as to any landline phone.
Some of the devices which have Bluetooth devices can connect to a mobile phone as a modem can also send SMS through wireless networks. SMS have been widely used with either GSM or non GSM systems.
Basically, text messaging intends to provide a means of sending message to one person to another no matter where they are as long as there is signal coverage from the mobile providers. This service is also used for automated systems primarily for the purpose of purchasing produces as well as services for mobile phone. Text messaging is also widely used in many contests.
According to some companies, the first ever text message was sent during 1989 by Edward Lantz, a former NASA employee. The text message was sent through a Motorola beeper. The message consists of numbers read upside down to read the message.
On December 3, 1992 in the United Kingdom, the first SMS messaging was used in a commercial sent through a Vodafone GSM network. The SMS message was sent by Neil Papworth with the use of a desktop computer. The SMS contains the word Merry Christmas which was sent to Richard Jarvis from Vodafone through a handset device model Orbitel 901. For the GSM systems, the first SMS using a Nokia phone was sent by an engineering student, Riku Pihkonen.
At first, text messaging has not been very popular since it was designed primarily to be used by the hearing impaired. During the 1990s only few messages were being sent through SMS. But during the year 2000, there have been a gradual increase in the use of text messaging.
As the text messaging system has been developed, it had gained popularity which has increased the number of SMS messages as well as a sudden increase of the numbers of subscribers.
Based on statistics, Finland, Norway and Sweden there are around 72% of the total population are using text messaging. In Europe and North America, there are over 85% users of SMS.
Among the Asian countries, the Philippines have the largest population of mobile subscribers who uses text messaging as a means of communication. An average of 20 text messages is being sent daily by a subscriber.
Because of this, the Philippines have been considered as the text capital of the world. On 2007 alone, there are 42.70 million people who are subscribers of mobile phones.Text messaging has been very popular in the Philippines because it has been a cheap and reliable alternative means of communication.
According to the Global Messaging Survey conducted by Nokia, text messaging has been proven to be an addictive activity. This has been confirmed by a study by the University of Queensland which is based in Australia. It has been compared to be as addictive as cigarette smoking.
Since text messaging has become very popular around the world, the text speaks or text lingo has been adapted as a way to type messages quickly. Text speak are abbreviations of words which tends to avoid typing the whole word which is time consuming. Another reason is that most mobile phones do not have QUERTY keyboards just like personal computers.

Understanding the Various Types of Satellite Dishes and Receivers
Published on August 31st, 2009.
One of the important technologies and equipment used in transmitting and receiving audio and video signals, satellite dish is a useful and sophisticated kind of microwave and parabolic antenna. Satellite dishes come in different models and sizes. People can also categorize the equipment based on its special uses. To know more about this equipment, it is best to have knowledge or background on the various kinds of satellite dishes.
Information on Motor-Driven Satellite Dish
A popular and major kind of satellite dish that many industries find reliable and useful, motor-driven dish is positioned on a durable piece of metal that has the capacity to determine and receive different signals from the space. This special receiver uses an efficient stepper motor that controls the position of the dish. Some of the receivers that support the functions of this technology are Universal Satellite Automatic Location System, Digital Satellite Equipment Control, as well as numerous positioners.
The Advantages of Multi-Satellite Dishes
Unlike motor-driven dishes, multi-satellite dishes have the capacity to receive audio and video signals from numerous satellite dishes in a single span of time. The sophisticated design of this technology allows it to receive signals from dishes positioned in several areas without rotating or repositioning the equipment.
Description of Very Small Aperture Terminal
Very Small Aperture Terminal or VSAT is a type of satellite dish that is commonly used in transmitting data related to the identification of several radio frequencies. In addition, this technology is also used to transfer narrowband signals that are commonly used in determining and verifying credit card information. Furthermore, Very Small Aperture Terminal is also useful in establishing broadband Internet connection in various areas.
The Uses of Ad Hoc and Direct to Home Satellite Dishes
The basic function of an ad hoc satellite dish is to receive audio frequencies. However, the functionality of this technology can be enhanced if it is used together with a Direct to Home satellite dish. The second type of satellite dish mentioned is commonly used only in one place. For those who want to share a single satellite dish to enhance the radio frequencies that they receive, it is best to use Satellite Master Antenna Dishes or also known to many people as Communal Antenna Broadcast Distribution.
The Distinct Features of Automatic Tracking Satellite
As the name of this satellite dish suggests, Automatic Tracking Satellite is very useful for people who are constantly on the go. These dishes are usually installed in vehicles since the equipment feature gyroscopes that are known for their capacity to determine positional changes. Additionally, gyroscopes are developed to find sensors for different Global Positioning Systems. In order for the technology to determine the satellite that it has detected, Automatic Tracking Satellite features numerous advance interfaces like Digital Video Broadcasting decoders.
A Look at Television Receive Only Satellite Dish
Finally, for those who have problems receiving clear audio and video signals in their television sets, they can use Television Receive Only satellite dish. This dish has the capacity to detect frequencies that fixed service satellite sends. However, in order to get the signals, the satellite dish should send them in the form of C-band.

A Concise Look at the Different Important Aspects Pertaining to Subnet Masks
Published on August 31st, 2009.
People use a subnet mask to identify what specific part of an Internet Protocol address is allotted for the host as well as the particular area reserved for the network. Also referred to as the netmask, this information is vital, as it is necessary to measure easily the specific parts for the host and the network. Generally, this information is very important because it is used to indicate whether different IP addresses belong to the same subnet. Learning all these things are really important as they can spell the successful flow or even the failure of a system to work smoothly and properly.
All in all, there are 32 bits constituting subnet masks, which are clearly represented by a block of zeroes and a block of ones. In this sequence, the zeroes are basically used to identify the part of the host. Meanwhile, the subnet mask of the so-called classful networks is set at 255.255.255.0, 225.225.0.0, or 255.0.0.0. Furthermore, the Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) notation is primarily a shorter form of what is used to express these subnet masks. This particular notation basically indicates the number of the network, as well as the netmask’s binary notation separated in between by a slash. An example of this CIDR notation would be 192.0.2.96/24.
How to Use a Subnet Mask to Determine the Portions of the Host and the Network in a Specific IP Address
With the use of a subnet mask, people can easily identify the specific network address for a particular IP address. The first thing they need to do is transpose the octal addresses into a binary form. After doing so, they must perform a simple bitwise AND action. For instance, the octal address for the IP address 156.154.81.56 is transposed as 10011100.10011010.01010001.00111000, while the subnet mask 255.255.255.240 can be converted into its binary form 11111111.11111111.11111111.11110000. After performing a bitwise AND action on these data, the exact result will be 10011100.10011010.01010001.00110000.
The Importance of Subnet Masks to Internet Protocol Networks
When managing an IP network, subnet masks are of great importance because they serve as a reliable means of communication. The defined subnet mask and the targeted IP address are used by network devices to identify whether the host is using a remote network or a local subnet. Usually, a network device sends an Address Resolution Protocol request when using a local subnet. The purpose of this operation is basically to recover the questioned system’s MAC address in order to relay communications to the Data Link Layer of the OSI Model.
Meanwhile, a different action usually happens when a remote network is used. In this case, packets are then routed by network devices toward the gateway in the routing table, which is an e-document storing the routes to the computer network’s different nodes. If there is no entry in the routing table that specifically matches network, a default route is necessary to send the packets. When there is no identifiable default route, the packets cannot go anywhere and are simply dropped in the process.
Peter Garant is a computer network and Internet security expert and has written several articles on subnets such as Understanding the Subnet Mask and Subnet: What You Need to Know.

An Informative Feature on FTA Dishes
Published on August 31st, 2009.
Known as one of the most useful and advanced data receivers that show efficiency in decoding audio and video signals, Free-to-Air (FTA) dish features sophisticated interfaces that have the capacity to identify several kinds of data transmitter systems. Before installing and using such technology, it is beneficial to first identify some of the equipment featured in this satellite dish. In this way, people can maximize the uses of having FTA dishes in their own places.
Special Features of FTA Receivers
For those who have interest in purchasing, installing, and using FTA receivers, they need to look at the special features of the equipment to be able to use them properly and efficiently. For instance, many FTA dishes have Low Noise Blockers that are equipped with feed horns. Feed horns provide channels for the receivers to effectively get data from various sources in different locations, while Low Noise Blockers are responsible for the conversion of data from radio and electromagnetic waves to electric frequencies. In addition, FTA dishes are equipped with a special dish that is capable of receiving data that follow Digital Television formats.
Information on C-Band Systems in FTA Dishes
Every FTA receiver features interfaces that are compatible with C-Band systems in order for the equipment to receive C-Band signals. Technically speaking, C-Band is one of the portions in electromagnetic spectrum that are very useful in radio and television broadcasting. Additionally, the microwave frequency of C-Band is very essential to create a form of communication that uses open satellite systems. In order to function well, FTA dishes with C-Band systems use feature Television Receive Only interfaces.
Overview of Ku-Band Systems in FTA Dishes
Aside from C-Band systems, FTA dishes also feature Ku-Band systems, which are very useful in television broadcasting. These two systems are very similar but unlike C-Band, which is found within four to eight gigahertz of the electromagnetic spectrum, Ku-Band lies within 12 to 18 gigahertz of the same spectrum. The utility of Ku-Band system can be realized in isolated areas. With the presence of this system, television networks are still able to transmit data and signals to homes and commercial establishments in remote places.
Advantage of C-Band Over Ku-Band
Both C-Band and Ku-Band are very useful in the functionality and efficiency of FTA dishes. Additionally, these systems have similar functions. However, C-Band are advantageous than Ku-Band because it is very flexible and the proportion of the power of C-Band are always adjusted to fit the needs of FTA satellites.
Distinct Uses of FTA Dishes
Television broadcasting networks use FTA dishes because these are very useful in their daily operations. However, people can also maximize the uses of the dishes if they know their special uses. These receivers are important to receive MPEG-2 signals, which on the other hand is essential to the functionality of digital television systems. As soon as MPEG-2 signals are received, the dishes convert them into frequencies, which are transmitted to television sets in different locations. Thus, with the use of the equipment, people can view different television channels in their homes even if they do not subscribe to television broadcasting service providers.
Peter Garant is a technology expert writing for Tech FAQ Web site and has written several articles about satellite TV such as FTA Satellite Info and Free Satellite Images Info.
