Piston-Powered Nuclear Fusion
Published on July 31st, 2009.
katarn writes "General Fusion is a startup proposing they can create commercially viable fusion using acoustic shock waves, triggered by 220 precisely controlled pneumatic pistons. Their approach is based on a US Naval research concept called 'Linus' and old research done by General Atomics. They feel we now have the high-speed, digital processing capable of pulling off this feat, where decades ago the technology was not available. I think we can hold off on the 'vaporware' claims for a bit; everyone is aware of the horrible track record for turning fusion concepts into reality, but they don't claim to be the first with the idea or that there are not substantial challenges in the way. If nothing else, it is a fascinating concept." Los Alamos National Laboratory has further details on this type of fusion, and longtime LANL researcher Ronald Kirkpatrick did an external assessment (PDF) of General Fusion's plans. Popular Science had a lengthy story about the company a while back. The reason they're back in the headlines now is that they've secured enough funding to begin work on a prototype reactor.Read more of this story at Slashdot.

PlayStation 3 slim listing pops up on Amazon Germany
Published on July 31st, 2009.
Here's something fun to start your weekend with. Amazon's German site now has a listing for "PlayStation 3 Konsole slim" from Sony Computer Entertainment, and really, it doesn't take years of foreign language class to figure out that English translation. It's listed as "platform independent" (har) and has its own Amazon Standard Identification Number (ASIN), but on the flip side, we're lacking a picture, release date, or any other tangible details. Can't say we've got a feel for the site's track record on random listings, but after all the rumors and possible sightings as of late, it really makes ya wonder.[Thanks, Mitchell B]

How to Dispose of Mobile Phones
Published on July 31st, 2009.
With greater emphasis on environmental issues, coupled with the ever increasing popularity of mobile phones, there appears to be a slight conflict of issues. Even devout green consumers utilise mobile phones, but all the while appreciate the harmful effects disposing of them improperly can cause.
With the jumble of metals and plastics that go into creating the modern mobile phone, disregarding them at the end of their life into landfill can be extremely hazardous. Technophiles and technophobes alike are continually embracing the latest designs, often replacing them at the end of contracts or when there’s becomes horribly outdated. But what becomes of these old warn out handsets?
Fortunately, those with an ecological conscience can benefit from one of a number of schemes to recycle old mobile phones. You needn’t be left out of pocket either. Many of these projects now offer a reasonable amount of money in return for your old device, giving an added incentive to what is a fantastic and much-needed innovation.
Even when we have grown tired or have replaced our old mobiles, they can still have a use. Whether they can be repackaged and sold or stripped down for their components and accessories, very few mobile phones are ever beyond use. Even if yours has met with a horrible accident and is well beyond saving, there are still recycling options available to you. Okay, you shouldn’t expect any financial reimbursement, but at least you can be safe in the knowledge that your mobile will be properly disposed of, rather than decaying for decades in a landfill.
One of the most damaging elements of a modern mobile phone are often the chemicals used within the batteries and other component parts. If these are improperly disposed of then they can potentially pose a significant threat to their surrounding environment; particularly if found with numerous other similar handsets.
Mobile phones should be treated like any other kind of waste when it comes to disposal. Many of us go to great lengths to filter our recyclable material from regular waste; the same should also be true of your old phone. Disposing of it should be done in the most ethical and convenient way. Fortunately many places, including many council refuge tips, will offer a straightforward way of ridding yourself of a mobile long past its best days.
It can be like saying goodbye to an old friend when you finally get rid of that old phone you’ve been carrying around for months and months. Of course, some will be more cherished than others, in fact some you’d rather just see the back of as soon as possible. But whatever way you do decide to part company with your phone, ensure that it is the right way.
If you are looking for more information on companies that recycle phones and those who offer financial rewards for those that are still in a reasonable position, the Internet is a great place to start. There are thousands of sites offering advice and also giving you the opportunity to send in your mobile in exchange for cash. You can also locate local recycling centres and refuge tips, who may also be able to provide a safe resting place for your old mobile phone.

Is Making Money Online at Home Just One Big Scam?
Published on July 31st, 2009.
“Is making money online at home a big scam?” It seems to be a common question posed when I talk to people about making money online. There seems to be a stigma attached to making money in this fashion and normally this question is due to a lack of knowledge and understanding of setting up and running an internet business.
Firstly - an internet home based business is an actual business! In most cases you must sell people things, or generate sales for someone else. This involves work! People are becoming more accustomed to spending money online, and it is really no different to walking into a shop and spending money. Someone along the line needs to sell their product or service, or no one makes anything! Therefore, unless you are charging people money and not giving them anything, it is not a scam!
Secondly, you need to put in the work, and take action – otherwise you probably will get involved in home based business scams. In the offline world, businesses don’t grow themselves, and they don’t in the online world either. You need to start small, and gradually take action each day, growing your sales, subscriber list, making or finding products, researching the market etc. It takes work! The get rich fast schemes on the internet may exist for some, but largely, it takes time to make money online as it does offline.
In saying that, the opportunities online are massive, and there is certainly the potential to make vast quantities of money in a relatively short space of time. You just need to learn the skills and take action each day. That is what will make you succeed online.
Here are a few pointers to get you started:
1. Do your Research – There are many people out there posing as “Gurus”, but there is a lot of great information out there. Do your best to research any products and courses that you plan to invest in and chose one or two reputable people to follow.
2. Invest in yourself – Education is key in your success. Invest in your education. Read books, and attend seminars on your chosen subject and always continue to learn as much as you can.
3. Take Action – All the education and information in the world is not worth a thing if you never apply it. Put the knowledge you have into action or you will never achieve anything. This is one of the defining factors between those who succeed and those who don’t!
4. Remain Focused – Make a plan and stick to it. Don’t be sidetracked by new opportunities each day, or you will achieve nothing! There are many business models out there – blogging, adsense, product creation, affiliate marketing - decide what business you are going to do and focus on it.
5. Persevere – You will not succeed overnight. If you do, then congratulations! For most of us though, you will need to fail a few times before getting it right, and even then, you will be able to improve as you go.
Keep these factors in mind as you start and grow your business – and remember to have some fun!

SEO Services
Published on July 31st, 2009.
Ordering SEO services can be costly and ineffective in the same time. Moreover it’s so easy to get into the pitfall of online swindlers, which are able to present themselves pretty professionally at the first sight. It’s obviously that if you are looking for help with SEO, you are the type of person can be easily ripped off in that field. I’m not trying to scare you off here saying that all of the SEO companies are scams, just trying to make you savvier.
I know lots of internet marketers who were very unhappy with the results of hired Search Engine professionals or SEO companies. Unfortunately, the main goal of some of these companies is to take your money. These are not just the suggestions of mine, have seen plenty complaints about this issue on varies forums. Two years ago I was thinking about ordering SEO services as well, but changed my mind once and for all.
That was a turning point for my online business. I decided to try SEO myself. I knew that most of beginner online marketers stay away from SEO thinking that it’s something too sophisticated and tedious they don’t want to deal with. I had thrown away all these useless beliefs and dived in the world of SEO.
In the very beginning it was pretty hard to focus on the most important things due to the lack of experience and knowledge. I was trying to feel the surface in the front of me and step forward wherever it was solid. While some of my online friends were still looking for some decent SEO services, I made my first steps to the success online.
I’ve been reading a lot of SEO guides, testing various SEO techniques and strategies, monitoring results. The only way for me was through the trials and errors. But I knew that mastering the art of Search Engine Optimization means a rock-solid basis for my success online in the future. Now after 2 years of SEO experience I can definitely say - “Yes, it was definitely worth that!”
And my suggestions were right: If you are serious about your future online business then you shouldn’t rely on someone else to bring web traffic to your websites. Doesn’t matter whether it’s PPC or paid banner advertisement, stop your ads and your income is a plain zero. Now I know that most of savvy internet/SEO marketers don’t pay a dime to drive traffic (unique visitors) to their websites.
Web traffic from organic search engine listings - this is what makes us rich. Know why? Simply because this traffic is free, a lot more targeted and gets more trust from your potential customers (and no click fraud on top of that). Theoretically you can order SEO services to get on the top of these organic listings but nobody guarantees you will be satisfied with the results or even won’t be ripped off. In the same time you are losing the main thing which is priceless - your own SEO skills and lore.
I’ve been in SEO for 2 years and I can fairly say - most reliable SEO professional you can hire is you and yourself! I came up with my own SEO system that has helped me to achieve sky-high results online I could only been dreaming of before.
During these 2 years I’ve been developing and testing my own SEO system called “SEO Easy WAY”. Recently I ended up with version #2 which works like a charm… It has helped a lot of people to succeed online, same as it can help you right now!
Forget about expensive SEO services, you don’t need them anymore. SEO Easy WAY v2.0 will walk you through the whole process - starting with keyword and niche research, ending up with #1 on Google and Yahoo in the shortest time possible. This system consists of 12 comprehensive steps to your online success.
Just visit our SEO Services website for more information about SEO Easy WAY v2.0.
I wish you all the best!

Games Fail To Portray Gender and Ethnic Diversity
Published on July 31st, 2009.
eldavojohn writes "A new study has found that game characters tend not to reflect cultural diversity. According to the paper from researchers across four universities (PDF): 'A large-scale content analysis of characters in video games was employed to answer questions about their representations of gender, race and age in comparison to the US population. The sample included 150 games from a year across nine platforms, with the results weighted according to game sales. ... The results show a systematic over-representation of males, white and adults and a systematic under-representation of females, Hispanics, Native Americans, children and the elderly.' The researchers also note that games 'function as crucial gatekeepers for interest in science, technology, engineering and math,' and that without these groups represented properly, 'it may place underrepresented groups behind the curve.'"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Linux, Twitter, and Red Hat “Win” Big At Pwnie Awards
Published on July 31st, 2009.
hugmeplz writes "The third annual Pwnie Awards took place last night at Black Hat in Las Vegas, and a full list of the winners has been posted. 'Most Epic Fail' honors went to the notorious Twitter/Google Apps hack from earlier this month that raised all sorts of questions about cloud computing security. Red Hat got skewered with the 'Mass 0wnage' award, also known as the 'Pwnie for Breaking the Internet,' for issuing a version of OpenSSH that left a backdoor open to hackers. The Linux development team earned 'Lamest Vendor Response' recognition for 'continually assuming that all kernel memory corruption bugs are only Denial-of-Service.' Naturally, Microsoft didn't slip past judges' eyes. Its vulnerability that enabled the Conficker worm to do its thing earned honors as the 'Most Overhyped Bug.' On the more positive side, the Pwnie Awards recognized security pros Wei Yongjun, sgrakkyu, Sebastian Kramer and Bernhard Mueller for accomplishments such as discovering bugs and demonstrating exploits. The Pwnie for Best Song went to Doctor Braid for his song Nice Report. Solar Designer snagged the Lifetime Achievement Award, for among other things, being the first to demonstrate heap buffer overflow exploitation, according to the Pwnie Awards Web site."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Is Making Money on the Internet Recession Proof?
Published on July 31st, 2009.
The term, Credit Crunch, is now a familiar part of almost every day language. The economic downturn that the global economy is experiencing is affecting millions of people throughout the world.
Thousands of people are losing their jobs on a daily basis and few businesses are recruiting staff in a bid to keep costs down. This leaves a lot of people who are out of work faced with the daunting prospect of a long-term search for employment.
If you have experienced this long search for work, which in some cases can approach twelve months or more, you may have wondered what other ways there are that you can make money with little or no start up costs.
The internet is a great way to top up your income. In fact, more and more people are turning to online sources in order to bring in some extra cash. Some of the more well known sites such as Amazon and Ebay are just two examples. But if you don’t want to go down these routes, there are other ways that you can make money online safely and quickly.
The easiest way to start on the internet is to find a subject that you are passionate about and turn this interest into a website or blog. Whether your passion is bungee jumping or tea drinking, there are other people out there who share the same interests as you and are hungry to find any information possible about the subject.
Think about all the people with unusual hobbies or interests like those who collect royalty memorabilia or clowns, or those who write about fly fishing! Websites that feature these topics have thousands of readers so if you don’t think other people would find your passion interesting, think again!
Once you decide on your topic, set up an impressive blog which you can do in minutes and write some excellent content and you will quickly place yourself as an expert in your field guaranteeing readers return again and again to see what new information you’ve added to your site. By adding advertising to your blog you’ll also generate some income, all for writing about something you love!
As more people prefer to spend their money online rather than on the high street, the demand for good quality content and excellent products at reasonable prices is huge. Placing yourself as an affiliate marketer where you promote a company’s products and earn a commission on any sales, is an excellent way to earn money and one that you can use an existing blog or website to promote.
Find an affiliate site whose products you’ve perhaps used or whose reputation you trust and sign up to their products and add links to your blog. So for example, if your blog is about tea you could find affiliate sources that would like to sell more teapots. Add their links to your site recommending why people should buy this teapot and, if someone buys the teapot as a result of your recommendation you will earn a percentage of the sale.
The internet will continue to be a great way to earn a considerable income, either during or out of a recession.
